Iran, as in the centuries past when the Silk Road was the major transportation means of conveying goods from Asia to Europe, is the best flight path for flights connecting Europe to Asian destination . With the new and more aggressive economic development in China, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea and overall South East Asia, there is a renewed and increasing interest in this part of the world. This means more flights passing the Iranian Airspace.
According to the report prepared by the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran (CAO) on the limitation of Mehrabad International Airport and traffic forecasts for early 2000's, suggestion was made that a new international airport close to Tehran was needed to alleviate this problem.
Responding to the daily necessities of aerial transportation and along with the development of Aviation Industry in the world and region, Imam Khomeini International Airport project (I.K.I.A.) located at 35 Km. South West of Tehran with an area of 15 thousands hectare between the Qum and Saveh highways is now taken into consideration aiming to secure flight safety and passenger convenience as much as possible. This Airport is accessible through two highways and two main roads as well as one particular rail connection road (linked to the metro network).
The master plan of this airport has been conformed with the most recent standards of I.A.T.A's Airport consultative committee's (A.C.C) and international consultants. strategic decision regarding the engineering design of the airport was made in early 90's. Instead of the usual methods of design and then build, a "design & Build" idea was accepted and evaluated carefully and a "design & build" contract was negotiated and awarded to a major Iranian construction company. After this initial stage, the aforesaid company awarded contracts to both domestic and international engineering process.
Preliminary design was handed to IKIA within less than six months of the award of the contract. The advanced preliminary design and the detailed engineering were concurrently undertaken, and are now more than 90 percent completed. The construction operations of the main parts of this project has been commenced according to the revised master plan. The exploitation of the first phase is predicted to be competed in 1999 and its operation will be continued to have the capacity of transporting 4.5 million passengers and handling 120 thousands tons cargo per year.
Providing navigational aids and equipment needed for the tower, is on the process by ICAO. Meanwhile, IKIA pushed the utilities. Power, gas, telecommunications, water (both potable and sanitary), and last but not least aircraft fuel supply. The main power supply will be from a major power line passing West of the airport and purchasing of the 230 to 20 KV. distribution station is under way. Water wells drilled previously were equipped. It is planned that a water purification system will bring quality water to both aircraft's and the terminal.
Telecommunications contracts were awarded and actual work is progressing to link IKIA and MIA. IKIA will have direct communication lines also. All infrastructure facilities are built for the 20 million passengers per annum capacity, while the initial operational capacity will be four to five million passengers per annum.
